Top 3 Duomos of Italy

A major cathedral is in every Italian city. Known as duomos, these churches not only provide a place of worship but as well as works of art. Some have even opened up top floor access for a majestic view of the city. You can only wonder how the intricate exteriors and interiors were built, carved or painted. One thing is for sure though, these top three duomos will leave you a lasting mark of Italy.

1. Florence - You can never get lost in Florence. This duomo stands proud and tall over the city with its magnificent Renaissance dome designed by Filippo Brunelleschi. The cathedral named in honor of Santa Maria del Fiore is a vast Gothic structure built on the site of the 7th century church of Santa Reparata. Entrance to the church is free but you can spend a few Euros to climb up the 400+ steps in the Campanile to get an epic view of Firenze.

2. Sienna - Europe is full of dark, gothic churches. However, the Moorish inspired church in Sienna dedicated to Santa Maria Assunta is adorned with exterior colors that are pleasing to the eyes- pink and gold.

3. Milan - The duomo of Milan took nearly six centuries to complete. Dedicated to St Mary of the Nativity, it is the seat of the Archbishop of Milan, currently Cardinal Angelo Scola. As the fifth largest Christian church in the world, it covers a surface of 109,641 square feet and an entire city block on the Piazza del Duomo.
